JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has chosen Indonesia for his first official overseas visit following his reelection, underscoring the growing strategic importance of bilateral relations between the two Indo-Pacific neighbors. Albanese is scheduled to meet with President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta from Wednesday to Friday, May 14–16, 2025, for high-level talks aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors.

Albanese is expected to be sworn in for his second term as prime minister on Tuesday, May 13. Shortly after the inauguration, he will depart for Jakarta the same evening to begin the official visit, according to a statement released by the Cabinet Secretariat of Indonesia.

“Prime Minister Albanese, who has just been reelected, will be inaugurated on May 13 and will begin his visit to Indonesia the following day, on May 14 in the evening,” the statement read via the Cabinet Secretariat’s official Instagram page.

The upcoming summit is set to take place at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, with both leaders expected to discuss a range of top priorities including economic collaboration, defense partnerships, and regional security cooperation. While the official agenda has not been made public, Indonesian officials have hinted at a desire to strengthen strategic alignment and secure tangible agreements that benefit both nations.

In advance of the visit, Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya met with Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Roderick Bruce Brazier on Monday, May 12, to finalize preparations and outline areas of cooperation expected to be highlighted during the Albanese-Prabowo meeting.

“The official visit of Prime Minister Albanese is expected to enhance strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, and yield concrete agreements that bring direct benefits to the people of both countries,” a senior government source said.

This will mark the second formal meeting between Prabowo and Albanese in recent months. The two previously held talks on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Peru in November 2024, where they discussed defense ties and trade prospects amid regional power shifts.
