Huayou Cobalt and UN Launch China-Indonesia Sustainability Network to Boost Green Economy

JAKARTA, investortrust.id — Chinese battery materials producer Huayou Cobalt has joined hands with the United Nations Global Compact and 19 partner organizations to launch a China-Indonesia Corporate Community Action Network for Sustainable Development, aiming to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through bilateral collaboration.
The initiative was announced during the inaugural Global Business High-Level Conference on Infrastructure Investment for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), hosted recently in Jakarta by the Indonesian government in partnership with the UN Global Compact.
Launched by China in 2013, the BRI is a global infrastructure and connectivity program designed to foster cross-border economic cooperation.
“In line with the spirit of the Belt and Road Initiative, Huayou holds the principle that wherever we invest, we must contribute to the local economy and society,” said Gao Baojun, Senior Vice President of Huayou Cobalt and President of Huayou Indonesia Nickel Industry Group, in a statement on Friday, May 30, 2025.
Attendees at the launch included UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia Gita Sabharwal, President of the UN Global Compact Network Indonesia Y.W. Junardy, and Liu Meng, a representative of the UN Global Compact in China.
The new action network aims to align business project designs with the needs of local communities and to build inclusive and sustainable empowerment programs through stakeholder collaboration.
“Let us seize this launch as a momentum to promote a participatory model of community empowerment through partnerships, community engagement, and government support,” Gao added.
He emphasized the need for multi-stakeholder cooperation to build a better future while supporting a high-quality implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative that aligns with the SDGs.
The network integrates resources from governments, corporations, international agencies, and non-governmental organizations from both China and Indonesia.
Its initial pilot programs will be launched near the Huayou Cobalt Indonesia Industrial Area, focusing on creating sustainable livelihood solutions for surrounding communities. Key areas of work include education, healthcare, sanitation, employment, small and medium enterprise development, socio-cultural activities, environmental sustainability, and local infrastructure development.
